What are developmental concerns?
Every child develops at their own pace — but when a parent senses that something may need attention, that instinct deserves to be taken seriously. At Empathic Psychologist in Limassol, we provide comprehensive developmental assessments for children and young people aged 2–18, helping families understand their child's unique developmental profile and access the right support at the right time. Sessions in English and Greek, in person in Limassol and online across Cyprus.
Child development encompasses a broad range of abilities and skills — cognitive, social, emotional, communicative and physical — that typically unfold in a predictable sequence across childhood. Developmental concerns arise when a child's progress in one or more of these areas appears to differ significantly from what would be expected for their age.
Developmental concerns may include:
Speech and language delays — limited vocabulary, difficulty forming sentences or being understood
Motor delays — difficulties with gross motor skills (walking, coordination) or fine motor skills (drawing, writing)
Cognitive concerns — difficulties with learning, memory, problem-solving or academic progress
Social and emotional developmental delays — difficulty forming relationships, regulating emotions or understanding others
Global developmental delay — significant delay across multiple developmental areas
Developmental regression — losing previously acquired skills following illness, stress or significant change
Early signs of neurodevelopmental conditions — autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia or sensory processing differences
Early identification and intervention consistently produce significantly better outcomes for children with developmental concerns — the earlier support is in place, the greater the impact on the child's trajectory. If you have a concern about your child's development, seeking assessment promptly is always the right decision.
Signs your child may need support
Language delays: limited vocabulary, difficulty combining words, unclear speech beyond expected age
Limited social communication: not pointing, waving or using gestures by 12 months
Difficulties with play: limited imaginative or symbolic play, strong preference for object manipulation
Attention and regulation difficulties: unable to focus for age-appropriate periods, extreme emotional reactivity
Motor difficulties: delayed walking, running, fine motor skills (drawing, cutting, writing)
Self-care delays: toileting, dressing or feeding difficulties beyond expected age
Significant regression: losing previously acquired skills
Social difficulties: limited interest in other children, difficulties with reciprocal interaction
Sensory processing differences: unusual responses to sounds, textures, light or movement
Trust your instincts
Parents are consistently the most accurate early detectors of developmental differences in their children. If something feels different — even if others have reassured you — a professional assessment will either provide reassurance or ensure early support is in place. Either outcome is valuable.
How Dr George Efraem helps: our therapeutic approach
Our approach is grounded in established evidence-based practice and draws on multiple therapeutic frameworks, tailored to each child's individual profile, age and developmental stage.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Where clinically appropriate, CBT is adapted to the child's cognitive and developmental level — addressing co-occurring anxiety, low self-esteem or emotional dysregulation.
Person-Centred / Child-Centred Therapy
Provides a warm, accepting therapeutic relationship — building the child's confidence, self-worth and sense of safety as a foundation for all developmental support.
Creative Multimedia and Play Therapy
A child-led, developmentally appropriate therapeutic approach — using play as the primary medium for supporting emotional, social and communicative development in younger children.
Social Skills & Emotional Development
Targeted support for social-emotional development — building the relational and emotional skills that underpin healthy peer relationships, friendships and school integration.
Attachment-based Approaches
They address the relational foundations of development — particularly important where developmental concerns are accompanied by difficulties in the parent-child relationship or early attachment.
Multi-disciplinary Collaboration
Where speech and language therapy, occupational therapy or other specialist input is indicated, Dr George Efraem provides referral guidance and collaborates with the wider professional network.
Assessment & Therapy Programmes for Developmental Concerns
Child Therapy Programme (Ages 2–12)
Where therapeutic support is recommended following developmental assessment, this is delivered through our Child Therapy Programme — tailored to the child's individual developmental profile and addressing emotional, behavioural or social concerns identified during assessment.
Adolescent Therapy Programme (Ages 12–18)
Where therapeutic support is recommended for older children and young people, this is delivered through our Adolescent Therapy Programme — addressing the emotional and social impact of developmental differences within a strengths-based, neuroaffirmative framework.
Parent-Child Empathy Programme
⭐Recommended for enhanced outcomes ⭐
Parents may also be recommended to attend our Parent-Child Empathy Programme — building understanding of their child's developmental profile and developing strategies to support their child's growth and wellbeing at home.

What to expect
Assessment at Empathic Psychologist begins with a thorough understanding of the child and family context — not just the presenting behaviour. Dr George Efraem takes time to understand the child's full developmental history, current stressors and the settings in which difficulties occur before formulating a clinical picture.
Following an initial free 15-minute consultation, Dr George Efraem conducts a comprehensive assessment (typically 2 sessions) using clinical interview, validated psychometric scales and collaborative feedback from parents and school where appropriate.
A personalised therapy plan is developed and shared with the family. Therapy typically runs 12–18 weekly sessions of 50 minutes, with regular progress reviews.
*Most families receive their first appointment within one week of getting in touch.
